Born on January 16, 1837 in Dresden, New York, died in 1908. Whidely interested, he worked also as
photographers for Mathew Brady. Very likely he did some of the Civil War pictures attributed
to Brady. In 1864 Brady and Burgess became partners. However within the 1870th Burgess turned
completely into the gun business. His basic patents of 1871 and 1872 became the foundation of several succeding models as the 1872, 1875 the 1878 and the Kennrdy rifles. The Marlin 1881 was designed by Burgess and John Marlin. His patents were used by many gun companies as Steyr in Austria for their Mannlicher rifles, Mauser of Germany, Colt or Marlin. The 1878 Burgess rifle was manufactured by Whitney from 1878 to 1880. It was in made in .45-70 Government Of these guns the following models were made 2nd Model, the serial numbers are now at the outside of the lower tang. A screw was added to the left side of the trigger plate. About 100 made. 3rd Model, saw a redesign of the receiver. The breechblock was thickened. About 1000 were made. |
